CAMPUS MANAGER

Windows Instructions

Macintosh Instructions

Students living in the dorms and apartments are required to register their personal computers before they will be allowed access to the JU network and Internet from their room. The Campus Manager system provides a way to automate the registration as well as ensure the computer meets the requirements of our Network Usage Policy. Click the "FAQ" link above for the specific requirements for your operating system and a list of supported antivirus sofware.

Campus Manager performs three functions. It certifies that you are an authorized user of the campus network. It checks your computer for operating system updates and antivirus software. It runs simulated threat scans against your computer to verify that you have the latest security patches installed.

Campus Manager can automatically register computers running Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X 10.3 or later. If you have a Linux computer or you want to connect your Xbox or Playstation to the network, you will have to register it manually. Click the "Game Consoles & Macs" link above for instructions and the registration form.

GAME CONSOLES

You can now register your game console and start playing immediately! No more waiting for the Administrator to manually process your request.

The first and most important step is to connect your game console to the network and try to initiate a connection with an online game. This makes sure that Campus Manager sees your game console and enters it into the database.

Next you will connect your computer back up and go to the website http://jucmrc.ju.edu/registration to register.

You will need to know the MAC address of your game console. There are instructions on how to find the MAC address on the registration webpage. Currently there are no instructions for the Playstation 3 or Wii. The site will be updated once we are able to find that information.

FAQ

Why do we need Campus Manager?
JU uses a single network for both its residences and its business needs. This means that the same network that you use to surf the Internet is connected to the servers that hold data on all our students and employees. We are required by law to protect that data to ensure only authorized people can access it. Viruses, trojans, worms and malware can compromise our security, therefore our policies require that any computer that connects to the network meets minimum security requirements. Since we are unable to go to everyone's room and verify that their computers are in compliance, we have purchased the Campus Manager system to automatically check each system before it is allowed on the network.

Will I have to register every time I turn on my computer?
No. We will periodically require you to re-register your computer to ensure that you are keeping up with operating system patches and antivirus updates. This will normally be done at the beginning of each semester. If a serious threat to our campus network is discovered, we will require you to re-register in order to verify that your computer is not vulnerable.

I'm changing rooms, will I have to register my computer again after I move?
No. Campus Manager remembers your computer and will allow access to the network the minute you connect in your new room.

What are the requirements for a Macintosh computer?
The required OS X operating systems and versions are listed below:

  • Panther - 10.3.9
  • Tiger - 10.4.6

You are not required to have antivirus or antispyware software installed, but it is highly recommended.

I have a Windows computer, what service packs and patches are required?

  • Windows XP - Service Pack 2 + all critical patches (Highly Recommended)
  • Windows 2000 - Service Pack 4 + all critical patches
  • Windows ME - all critical patches (Not Recommended)
  • Windows 98 - all critical patches (Not Recommended)

What Windows antivirus software packages are supported?

  • Grisoft AVG (Free)
  • Norton Antivirus (Home Edition) (Included with System Works and Internet Security packages)
  • Trend Innoculan
  • McAfee (Home version)

My antivirus software isn't supported and I'm not paying to get another one. How can I register my computer?
You can install Grisoft AVG which is free. It doesn't hurt to have two antivirus packages running at the same time.

Am I required to have antispyware software?
We are not requiring antispyware, but that may change in the future. Some spyware goes beyond just tracking your movement on the Internet. It may prevent you from patching your operating system or even disabling your antivirus protection. We strongly recommend installing antispyware software. Most of the good antispyware software is available for free.

The CSA software will not run or even download on my computer, why?
We have found that Norton Internet Security will prevent the download and running of the CSA application. You will have to open the Norton Internet Security control panel and disable it. Remember to re-enable it after you are successfully registered.

I've installed the patches and antivirus software but my computer still won't pass. What's wrong?
We have found that computers that are infected with viruses or have certain types of spyware on them will not properly install security patches and can disable antivirus and antispyware software. You will need to take your computer to "RCC Nights" to get it cleaned up. Contact the Helpdesk x7200 for the locations and times of "RCC Nights".

The Microsoft website won't allow me to download patches or service packs. Why am I having this problem?
More than likely, you are running an illegal copy of Windows. The new Windows update service verifies that your copy of Windows is legit before it will allow you to download the patches you need.

I'm concerned about my privacy. Is Campus Manager going to track everything I do?
Campus Manager does not track your computer activity, nor does it look at any data files on your computer. The CSA application runs during registration to verify your operating system and patch level along with your antivirus software and virus definition dates. It deletes itself after you are successfully registered and nothing from Campus Manager is left running on your computer. Another component of Campus Manager is the Nessus scan. These scans simulate viruses, worms and trojans probing your computer for vulnerabilities. Their purpose is to make sure you have the latest patches to your operating system installed. The real threat to your privacy comes from the viruses, worms, trojans and spyware that can get on your computer if it isn't properly protected.

My port was shut down because I have a virus. Isn't Campus Manager supposed to prevent this?
By meeting the requirements to register successfully with Campus Manager, you will reduce your chances of being infected by a virus. Unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee that you won't. With all new viruses, there is a gap between the time it is discovered and the time your antivirus software will be able to detect it. You may have been unlucky enough to encounter the virus before your antivirus software was updated. Following some safe computing practices will reduce your chances of this happening.

I have no clue how to patch my computer or install antivirus software. Can anyone help me?
Call the Helpdesk x7200 and ask about "RCC Nights". Our student Resident Computer Consultants can help you get your computer clean of viruses and spyware, as well as update your operating system and install antivirus/antispyware software. They will not fix your computer, but will let you know if there is anything wrong with it. You will be responsible for getting any repairs done by the manufacturer or a local computer shop.

How can I play multiplayer games with my Xbox or PS2?
Click the link above labeled "Game Consoles" for information on playing games over the Internet or across campus. Remember, you are allowed to have only one device connected to your network jack at one time. Routers, switches and hubs are prohibited.
